This is going on my ever increasing “MUST READ” list. Suicide. I find it astounding that more people die from suicide then from murder. I can’t find any reason on a profoundly personal level why I would reach for that option. Life is too dear and too short to make it any shorter. Intellectually I think that it is a perfectly acceptable option for someone to opt for. The kind of united existential background, that is both pervasive in our culture and resounding for me, would allow that one can choose to end their life. I should point out that I am not including euthanasia in this argument. One may say that this is a cop out but I think one should have the right to choose their end when disease is ravaging their bodies but I don’t think people know what they will do. I have had two people that said they would end it but at the end one of them fought tooth and nail to hang on. No, suicide is when one decides that life isn’t worth living for what ever reason. Now.. here is where I get confused. I think one has the right on a certain level but I also find it to be the most selfish act there is. One shoves all kinds of chaos and guilt on those left behind. Do you have a right to do this to others? The secular arguments for are known to be but not the secular arguments against. So this is going on my list… …
