This is going to be a long one, so please bear with me. As you all know, we do rescue. We foster a lot of kittens, particularly bottle babies and special needs. It takes an awful lot of our time, but there is a great need for it. We give up a lot in our lives to do this, something that people outside of rescue dont seem to grasp. For individual people, you may have one litter you need help with, but we get at least half a dozen emails a day about cats/kittens, and then pages of cats/kittens in the shelters near us on top of that. Community Cat Coalition of Edmond already has over 60 cats/kittens within the rescue, spread between the foster homes, and right now we simply dont have room for more. Today a box with two bottle babies in it was left in front of a house in Edmond. This is so unbelievably irresponsible, and has angered everyone within our group. We have no idea how long the kittens sat there, as the owner left at 4:30 am, and the box was not found until 6:30 pm. These kittens are only about 2 weeks old, and have an upper respiratory infection. Kittens this age also need to be fed every 2-3 hours, as well as kept at a certain temperature to make sure they dont overheat or get cold and start shutting down, as they cannot regulate their own body temperature at this age. One of the kittens is not in good shape, and if either dont make it it is completely the fault of the person that dumped them, not knowing when or if they would be discovered. Of course they are now in our care as we are the only bottle feeders for the group, even though we do not have the time to take in bottle babies, particularly sick ones, right now. These kittens should be the responsibility of the person that allowed them to be born, and yet somehow we are now the ones that will have to care for them, and cry for them if they dont make it. Dumping kittens (or puppies, or any living being) like this is never acceptable, and yet it happens all the time. On Monday night we picked up a litter of 4 kittens from the local animal shelter, because at least two of the litter have leg deformities, and we didnt want them to be put down. We werent going to post them until we had x-rays taken, and a plan in place for their rehabilitation, but we need to talk about them now. They are approximately 4-5 weeks old, and are going to take a lot of our time in order to get them to be as mobile as possible. We didnt want to take in another litter at this time, but we were willing to stretch ourselves even more to accommodate them. Between these guys and the bottle babies, on top of other kittens in our care, we are going to be at our breaking point. Hubs has been working a lot of overtime lately, and was already averaging less than 6 hours sleep a night. With these new kittens, it is going to mean even less. So please be patient with us if we dont respond to posts/messages, or if we dont have a chance to post much at all. If you would like to help with the care of any of these kittens, links to donate to the rescue are: Amazon Wish List: amzn/w/3I7IX00NL7MQG PayPal donation link: on.fb.me/15zOMmr Thanks for reading this. It wasnt as eloquent as I wanted, or even as informative, because we are just so tired, and not in a great state of mind to write well.
