This is how 9/11 evolved for me. I had taken a 90 day assignment on a heart unit at Clearlake Regional hospital in Webster, between Galveston and Houston. I only had a few days left on my assignment when 9/11 occurred. 9/10 I went to work around 2:30 in the afternoon and normally get off at 11:00 pm. Each nurse that travels on assignments negotiate there pay and all that stuff before agreeing to assignment. I really never like to work extra when traveling because Id rather be enjoying the new area. On this evening at the end of the shift and time for replacements they were short a nurse and ask if I would stay over till 7 am, I agreed to help. Nothing remarkable thru out the night, went home went to bed and rite to sleep because I had to return that evening at 2:30. Billie woke me around noon to eat and start getting ready for work. Turned the TV on and the first thing I saw was the twin towers going down, over and over it took some time for me to grasp what was going on. We were hearing air planes jets flying very close and loud. Buzzing all around the Houston area. Very concerning, found out the refineries around Houston were thought might be a target. I went to work to find a lot of confusion. drs were told to discharge everyone that wasnt there for a life threatening condition. So we were discharging right and left emptying the hospital. By the time I left the hospital at 11:30 most pts had been discharged. I was off the next two days and was glued like everyone else. got a call from my manager telling me I could leave early and they would pay me for the two days and go on back home. I was happy, happy, happy ready to get out of there and get back to west texas. We loaded the van Billie jumped in her mustang and we started home. For 8 hrs while driving I digested all that had happened, found myself crying a lot thinking it will never be the same again. My greatest fears have come true, we will never be the same again.
