This is how it all started. One day I was jamming at MSM dorms with my friend Konstantinos Papaioannou , an incredible bouzouki player from Greece who was visiting New York at the time. All of a sudden, Defne Şahin, another great friend and a Turkish-German jazz singer entered the room just to say hi. Excited about the meeting, the three of us decided to play a song together. Problem was that we had no idea which song all three of us would know. Defne and I proposed Üsküdara Gideriken, a famous Turkish song that we once played together but Konstantinos said he had never heard about it. While starting to think of other possibilities I sloppily played the melody of Uskudara on the piano. Immediately, Konstantinos eyes opened wide as he said enthusiastically, oh, of course I know this song, this is Apo Xeno Topo!!. The result is this beautiful moment you can see below. 3 musicians, Turkish, Greek and Israeli, playing one song and just having a great time. Later on, I found out that the same melody has also served in the Jewish Synagogues of Istanbul as a Piyyut (Jewish prayer melodies) called Mi Kamocha. Those discoveries are truly thrilling to me because I feel like they reveals something deep about the essential connections and similarities between us all. Similarities that needs to be exposed more among the many differences that we usually focus on. This moment has led me to a journey of discovery. A journey that turned out into a musical program. This program will be recorded live today, hope you can join me on that one :) (and yes, Felicja has a shelter in hand) https://m.facebook/events/678185752271396?ref=bookmark
