This is how the United Way of the Tanana Valley is helping the Fairbanks Community Food Bank... United Way funding is unrestricted money, not designated for specific projects, so we are able to use it to purchase gas for our vehicles which pick up and deliver food to those who ask for food assistance, or to pay the GVEA bill which supplies electricity for the warehouse. Most grant funding, for example, requires us to do special projects. United Way money allows us to keep the warehouse open and the vehicles on the road. If other grants require a “match” we can also use United Way money to leverage dollars from other sources. It has been the backbone funding for this food bank since 1985 and we are deeply grateful for it. There would be no food bank in this community if we had not been a United Way member agency for the past 30 years. We receive free food and give it away free, because of the consistency of United Way funding. -Sam Kirstein, Executive Director
