This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover. – Exodus 12:11 Well, it ain’t quite the Passover but it’s a really special meal. Thirty-eight years ago on this night Gail was very pregnant with our first child, a daughter, to be born in January (didn’t make it till February 9th, 1977). For Sarah’s birth announcement we had decided to borrow from Isaiah 9, ‘for unto us a child is born’. Since Gail was, uh, too rotund to travel we had Christmas Eve dinner at home alone. It was bitterly cold outside and somewhat inside so we ate dinner on the hearth beside the fireplace; we had spaghetti. Since that Christmas Eve in 1976 each year our family eats spaghetti in front of the fireplace, no one outsider the family gets to be a part of this sacred meal. The sons-in-laws weren’t invited until they were engaged to be married. After dinner we exchange Christmas gifts and watch a movie. I didn’t grow up big on traditions, in fact I devoutly liked to break them, but I’ve learned the value of these to family from Gail and others; they are valuable and really cool. I hope you have family & friends with whom to celebrate. Merry Christmas from the Frederick-Kodinsky-Maleiko family including Bigwig! We love you, Jack and all the crew:)
