This is indeed welcome news. There have been so many anecdotal complaints by Singaporeans about discrimination at the workplace, which are in reality so difficult to substantiate. It is particularly challenging when a prospective employer is hell bent on hiring their own kind, compounded by the fact that it easy to do business in Singapore. For that reason the hiring philosophy of all Singapore-based businesses must be about hiring Singaporeans first before considering non-Singaporean applicants. Any business that adopts such practices are likely to earn considerable goodwill from Singaporeans, attract better-qualified Singaporean applicants, and be seen to be among the better employers in Singapore. Not only should MOM highlight discriminatory companies (and bar their company directors from simply setting up other companies), the Ministry should also champion locally-based SMEs and MNCs that make it a point to hire Singaporeans wherever they can.
