This is long but please read. This is not about a bucket of water dumped on my head or challenging someone else. This is personal. This is about my cousins & me, Dianna, Denease , Debbie, Donna, Don, Deannie, David, Spencer, & Joe. Other than the D in most of our names we share Familial ALS. Our grandmother was taken by ALS. My uncle and Father of David, Deannie, Denease & Dianna passed away because of ALS. My Dad had PSP-another fatal neurological disease with no cure. I watched him at 65 build a new home himself & 10 years later take his last breath with a perfectly good mind frozen inside a body that could do nothing-he couldnt speak, eat, move a muscle or even blink an eye. Unfortunately for us there is a 50 percent chance this could have been passed to us or we could have passed it on. If we dont have the gene it stops. Some of us submitted DNA to Emory Univ. to be used in a study. None of us have been tested. I personally have not wanted to know. As I get older or if I had symptoms of ALS or PSP I definitely would be open to testing if it would help someone else. Those of you who knew my Mom will appreciate this-others may think it inappropriate but here it is- When she found out she had cancer & 6 weeks to live she said, Well we all got to die of something.
