This is long, but theres a message here: For those of you who dont know, I run an energy efficiency business. Basically, we go into peoples homes and do retrofits in order to lower electric bills. Its a no-cost service, and the requirements for participation are minimal. Typically, we focus on low-income areas because thats where the highest savings can be achieved. For example, we reduced a mother of threes electric bill by almost $1,000 per year (and have saved an additional $60,000 per year total for the rest of our customers). Imagine what that can do for someone. I say all of that to say this: ignorance has serious consequences. The project were currently on is segmented into about 12 different properties surrounding a low-income area in SWA. I found out yesterday that one of the tenants, who denied the service, has been telling other tenants on the block that their electric bills are going to go up and this is all a scam. What does he base this assumption on? Well, along with doing these retrofits, we also install compact-fluorescent-lightbulbs. Apparently, when this gentleman lived in Las Vegas, his wife purchased some and they installed them in the bathroom. According to him, they all blew out and now he doesnt believe theyre actually energy efficient...despite the fact that the comparable wattage to incandescents is superior and their life span is about 10x greater. Hes fully unaware of anything else we do, but is 100% convinced that what were doing will cause peoples electric bills to increase (despite all of the evidence to the contrary). The problem is that hes telling other people this, and some of them (who dont know any better) are buying into it. His ignorance is infecting others, and it will cause them to miss out on lowering their electric bill at NO COST! I think about this situation and compare it to the multitude of people who regularly vote against their own self-interests. Now, Ill be the first to admit that the Democrats are wrong on a lot of things; but, Im always amazed when someone who hates food stamps or access to affordable healthcare yet needs these things the most will vote for those trying to take such services away. And the GOP typically takes on the same exact philosophy as this tenant: prey on peoples fear, whip them into a frenzy, and cause them to act against the very things that can assist them in life.
