This is my first, and most likely my last post that will have anything to do with Israel/Gaza but it needs to be said. One of my friends recently had a brief (albeit unscientific) look into which international crises achieve most attention - and why. By typing in the name of a country/crisis and the year 2014 and seeing how many hits google had received, the results were: 1. Gaza - 96,200,000 2. Syria - 79,300,000 3. South Sudan - 46,300,000 4. Mali - 37,600,000 5. Central African Republic (CAR) - 29,900,000 6. Iraq ISIS - 26,800,000 7. Somalia - 17,600,000 8. Boko Haram (Nigerian) - 15,300,000 Bear in mind that civilians in Syria, South Sudan, and CAR have experienced atrocity crimes and forced displacement all year, with several thousands, if not -tens of thousands - killed in each and millions more displaced. The UN reckons that Somalia and South Sudan stand on the brink of famine. And that Boko Haram have killed thousands of civilians in in the past few months alone and holds hundreds of civilians captive. The many deaths in Gaza and the few in Israel are both unjustifiably tragic but this all raises a very telling point about how we value human life and why the UN, humanitarian NGOs (many of which i support and work with closely), my facebook friends and the rest of the world seem to apportion their care and compassion in a way that doesnt align rationally with the degree of the humanitarian crises but is instead dictated by the news cycle or some other unclear agenda. Worth a moment of thought. Thanks Alex Bellamy.
