This is not a bedsheet I bought at bargain rate. This is a painting by the famous artist, Pablo Picasso. You are free to call me stupid. But honestly, I dont understand what it is and why it is considered as great art. I have been always wondering about works of art like this. An artist once told me that people who cant draw properly usually paint something like this to hide their limitations. I am not saying that Picasso did so. But in art like this we cant distinguish the real artist from the pretender. Similar works are found in other art forms also. A guy takes some clay and moulds into the shape of a tapioca and gives it a name. Suddenly it has become a great work of art. People who cant write good stories write something abstract and call it some ism, thereby alienating a whole generation from fiction. Those who cant make entertaining cinema make so called art films. It is easy. Place the camera before a character sitting in a dark place smoking cigarettes. Dont allow him to talk. Occassional grunts would suffice. Shoot some scenes like this and stitch them together. Take it to film festivals. Nowadays,these kind of films are not getting the encouragement they enjoyed once. Still, nothing wrong in trying ones luck. In theatre too, there is a similar movement. Plays in which there are no characters. The actors come on stage and perform something like a group dance. Shakespeare never wrote such a play. That I am sure. Even people who dont understand and cant enjoy these seem to consider them great works of art. Perhaps they think they would be labelled stupid if they told the truth. I remember the story The Emperors New Clothes in such circumstances. And even at the risk of being labelled as stupid, I prefer to be the boy who called out the Emperor is naked.
