This is not a major event but extremely fun to watch. The bundles of coils (coronal loops) are actually charged particles swirling along magnetic field lines and some plasma seems to be dancing high above the solar surface. Coronal loops are found around sunspots and in active regions. These structures are associated with the closed magnetic field lines that connect magnetic regions on the solar surface. Many coronal loops last for days or weeks, but most change quite rapidly. The electric currents in the Sun generate a complex magnetic field with extends out into interplanetary space to form the interplanetary magnetic field. As the Suns magnetic field is carried out through the solar system by the solar wind, the Sun is rotating. Credit: NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory (Little SDO)
