This is not an attempt to engage in ethnic diatribe, or a bid to establish supremacy of any kind; it is an effort to set records straight. It’s a common joke among Nigerian stand ups that Yoruba’s are cowards, we can forgive them, afterall a joke is a joke. But it is has come to my observation that a lot of people while making comments on the social media take this joke to be a tangible submission. We need to remind ourselves of valiant women like Fumilayo Ransome Kuti and Kudirat Abiola who defied the intimidation of Military government. I don’t know a Nigerian Musician living or dead that is as fearless as Baba 70. Lets not forget the men at the fore when Abacha was pursuing his self succession project with an unflagging and murderous zeal, Olikoye Kuti, Beeko Kuti, Falana, Jiti Ogunye, Wale Osun, Tunde Oladunjoye, Wumi Raji, Dipo fashina, Olorode etc. We must not forget students that fought government without the fear of the gulag; Segun Okeowo, Segun Mayegun, Ola Oni Ropo Ewenla, Johnson Amusan, Femi Onanuga, Lanre Adekanle, Isiaka Adegbile amongst others. It is better for us to live jokes as jokes, thank God for the comedians who ease our many tensions, but seriously speaking Yoruba’s have never been cowards. Cowardice is a trait wherein fear and excess self-concern override doing or saying what is right, good and of help to others or oneself in a time of need. It’s a trait that can never be traced to an Omoluabi. If you are among those who think Yoruba’s are cowards, go do a check and find out the people that have been most vocal and fearless in the face of injustice and oppression, those who came out most when signs of looming disaster was terrifyingly evident in this country. YORUBAS ARE NO COWARDS! Iwaju akin, eyin akin kiki ogun, iwaju akin eyin akin kiki oogun, ibi o ba le la n ba omokunrin.
