✪ ✪ This is one event that EVERYONE can take part in – and we hope everyone will! THIS THURSDAY, JULY 10, starting at 8:30 am at Sports Traders Diamond at Royal Athletic Park, the HarbourCats and Peninsula Co-op, along with local media, are inviting EVERYONE to come to Sports Traders Diamond at Royal Athletic Park to throw a ceremonial first pitch, and help us reach our goal of 5,000 – yes, FIVE THOUSAND – and beat previous attempts by other minor league baseball teams. This is the one time where our fans can ALL be on the field! And it’s all thanks to our sponsors in the media, and to Peninsula Co-op. WORLD RECORD FIRST PITCH -- JULY 10, 8:30am-7pm, Royal Athletic Park. How does this work? Anyone – any age, any walk of life – can come to the park, throw a pitch, sign our sheet, and be entered to win prizes. ✪ They will also receive a game discount voucher and valuable coupons, from Peninsula Co-op. As an added incentive, all those who get to the park before 4pm to “pitch in” will be entered in a draw to win a $200 gas card from Peninsula Co-op. Fans should enter the field through the Caledonia Street ticket booths, and HarbourCats staff will be there directing traffic. Eagles team baseball players will be the catchers for the first pitch. We’ll start early -- and, ABSOLUTELY, it will run all day long, so we can get the numbers we need. “We wanted to do something where everyone could get involved,” said General Manager Jim Swanson. “Very few people get to actually set foot on the diamond, let alone throw a pitch and feel truly part of the game action. This will let them be on the field and be part of all that happens around a HarbourCats game. “We hope to convince people working anywhere near our park to come over on a coffee break or lunch break, or to stop in after work. Kids are definitely welcome, and we can take multiple pitches at one time. We think we can beat the old record – our goal is to get 5,000 first pitches thrown.” On August 14, 2012, the Madison Mallards of the Northwoods League (a similar league to the West Coast League) had 2,052 fans participate in “World Record for Most Ceremonial Pitches Before a Baseball Game.” Just 16 days later, the Brevard County Manatees in Florida more than doubled that mark with 4,218 participating. “We know Victoria is a city where people like to get involved, and do things they can be proud of in the community – here’s a great chance, that will take everyone just a few minutes to join in,” said Swanson. “You don’t have to have a good arm, or have played the game, come and see what it’s like up on the mound and help us reach that number of 5,000.” The HarbourCats play that night, the first game of a three-game series with the Medford Rogues, a 7:11pm start – and to make this World Record possible, the teams won’t be taking batting practice or infield practice on the diamond prior to the game, they will warm up by swinging in the batting tunnel and taking fielding practice in the outfield. “Peninsula Co-op likes to focus on bringing the community together, and what better way than to have everyone band together to set a world record,” said Penny Sopel, Marketing Director for Peninsula Co-op. “This is a creative idea by the HarbourCats and an event that is out of the ordinary, so we hope everyone will join in and give it a try.”
