This is one of my favorite Dylan songs and being slow and thick as I am, I have only just now discovered Thea Gilmore; and now I cant get enough of Thea and I am listening to everything she has written and sung. Theas rendition of I Pity the Poor Immigrant is by far the most stirring, haunting, and deeply touching version of this piece. I have been listening to the song for many years and always I ask myself, Who is the immigrant? I do not feel it is anyone from any foreign shore among us. The immigrant is us. I always seem to come up with the same answer. I have no idea what Dylans answer would be. I pity the poor immigrant Who wishes he wouldve stayed home Who uses all his power to do evil But in the end is always left so alone That man whom with his fingers cheats And who lies with every breath Who passionately hates his life And likewise, fears his death I pity the poor immigrant Whose strength is spent in vain Whose heaven is like Ironsides Whose tears are like rain Who eats but is not satisfied Who hears but does not see Who falls in love with wealth itself And turns his back on me I pity the poor immigrant Who tramples through the mud Who fills his mouth with laughing And who builds his town with blood Whose visions in the final end Must shatter like the glass I pity the poor immigrant When his gladness comes to pass ~Bob Dylan Play Video Thea Gilmore - I Pity The Poor Immigrant Celtic Connections 2011 - Bob Dylan Tribute
