This is one of the best articles Ive read all year (apart from cricket strength articles obviously!!). Ive been shouting this for a long time and I am living proof you shouldnt specialise too early. I played pro cricket and rugby together for 2 yrs until 1997. I may not as been as good as some so didnt play as much as I could have but I hardly missed a game due to injury! There were others better. Caddick wasnt bad!! The only thing early specialisation does is produce Robotic, unnatural clones who cant withstand any stresses outside what they are used to in training. Sorry, but county cricket academys recommending their 16yr olds to focus only on cricket is wrong. Thats my opinion, sorry. However, if you dont value my opinion read this regardless of what sport your child plays. Mike Boyle is as good as it gets for movement training for the young Two big takeaways according to Boyle from this article are 1- Kids of rich parents get hurt MORE! ( socio-ecomonic status was a predictor of injury risk but, probably not like you think) 2- Elite athletes specialized later than their sub-elite counterparts! So many great pros were multi-sport athletes. We had two Red Sox pitchers last year who did not pitch until they signed major league contracts. One was a Junior College Quarterback and first baseman ( now an elite pitcher), one played college basketball in addition to baseball. nytimes/2014/06/11/opinion/sports-should-be-childs-play.html?_r=0
