This is one of the most FRIGHTFULLY disgusting WONDERFULLY sick-and-twisted little fables that I have ever seen... In the battle to choose between good and evil, I wish that every little neo-con, neo-nazi, or any other neo ANYTHING ... could be expected to have watched this HORRIBLE-y grand little film. And, OMG ... the performance by Ulrich Thomsen. NOT to take anything from Mr Mikkelsen, but he mouths the words to a song, and I bust into bellowing laughter?? --less than 3 minutes after hed made tears leap from my eyes by simply --and I do mean S-I-M-P-L-Y--- asking, Should we have a go?. Rarely does an invitation to share a pastry evoke ... tears. And then, I held my breath as I silently watched every motion on theses mens faces as they ... ate a pie. Through tears, I mentally begged the director to ... leave this tender moment alone... He did. And then he --wickedly enough- went to that epilogue with --OMG is he really going there -?- sunlight breaking through a grey sky ... Birds on wing --the sound of their song ... and ---ohdeargod SOMEBODY ... MAKE HIM STOP .. WHAT?!? Adam. Yer BLOND? OH well hell. Of course you are. But the how deep is your love ... thingy...? For whatever reason .... I freakin LOST it. And I sure as hell hope it stays lost. After seeing it, I found myself in complete agreement when I then found this statement (NYTimes review): The films cutesy, misanthropic characterizations; Scorsese-style beatings; and bloody, comic gunplay announce, People are deluded animals, God is blind or dead, and life is meaningless, but the supernatural events say the opposite, and Mr. Jensens tone is so cagey that its hard to tell if he has an opinion one way or the other. And THAT is why this little film works in such a BIG way, for me; it absolutely r-e-f-u-s-e-s to tell you what to think. So the very LAST folks who will get this film WOULD BE: the neo-cons, the neo-nazis, and/or the neo anythings. --but thats okay; they already have plenty of folks who tell them exactly what to think As a life-long agnostic, I l-o-n-g ago grew insanely BORED with b-o-t-h the religious folk AND the atheists as they each rail against ... whatever. Decades of nodding politely as their spittle flies about the rooms of memory ... --always needing to wonder if they will EVER notice that there are a great many folks who simply do not c-a-r-e about their awfully BIG -awfully AWFULLY important [--and mighty, of course: MIGHTY] little crusade(s) (etc-etc) ---the importance of which ... they see e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e. Finally, a religious film ... for agnostics ...(?!?) Lotta laughter in this film. Might not do for the religious OR the atheist folk.... Then again, Mr Seitz referred to it as a: Quentin Tarantino remake of Going My Way. Effin-A... !! Although ... Taratino might DREAM of showing this much restraint. Then again, there is no way that Travolta or Jackson could e-v-e-r rein themselves in and deliver the way Thomsen does here. I remember having my heart ripped apart by John Hurt in Elephant Man --and being amazed that he could do this ... while hidden beneath all of that massive make-up. Decades later, Ive now had a similar experience while watching Ulrich Thomsens very small and most excellent performance.... except, of course, that he had ZERO makeup to hide under. [FYI... The film is available -gratis- on TubiTV --online and/or on/Roku]
