This is one of the most memorable moment in my life. We wanted - TopicsExpress

This is one of the most memorable moment in my life. We wanted this moment to happen for various reasons. Most of us in our family learnt a lot from my cousin sister Maggie. She showed us how to be innocently sweet and mentally strong. We never thought she could cross this hurdle with a beautiful smile all the time. Around 8 years before my chithappa called my dad and cried and told Maggie his daughter lost both her kidneys and is counting days from vellore CMC. We were all shocked as she is the most innocent childish talkative girl in our family and she is got the loudest laugh with ultimate body language. We all love to see her laugh and make fun of it. She doesnt get angry with me but gives a sweet hug if i tease her. It was not easy to digest the fact at that moment when my chithappa informed us. Then my dad asked them to come to Chennai and when they reached home she showed no reaction and took rest. We gathered courage and met some specialists and finally doctor from malar hospital (old one) gave us hope. So they stayed at our house and continued dialysis. You will know the pain of dialysis when you are the patient or when you be with a patient. But she never cried before us and we initially thought she is very innocent to understand the seriousness of the issue but later we found this wrong. She is very religious, like it or not it is simply her faith on God and the belief that god will show her the way was making her stand strong with so many people crying around her. (Some times the man made God helps too... :) ) Then her health improved with N number of dialysis and she stayed all while at our house. Doctor strictly told the success rate of transplant is high only when the blood relation agrees to give kidney. My chithappa, chithy and their elder daughter malar who got newly married that time was ready to donate. Chithy with sugar complaint could not donate and malar was too young to donate and luckily chithappa was healthy to donate. So after so many checkups and tests they gave us a package for the transplant with surgery, stay and recovery included. One fine day surgery happened successfully and I still remember seeing her with green mask through the small glass panel in ICU door. Then after discharge we prepared our first floor room for her with many restrictions for the visitors to stop infections. She was always with the mask and no one was allowed to see her. My other chithappa who was in US wanted to be part of this life saving struggle by the entire family so he took care of the entire expense. She slowly recovered for years with so many tablets and many many tests. Only before a year her doctor agreed for her marriage with many many conditions. We were eagerly waited for this moment from that day. It is very satisfying to see her ever happy face again today with extra glow. I booked tickets next day the marriage dates are announced just to witness this marriage. Her Husband also transplanted a kidney from her sister. Moral of the story: Kidney failure is not as easy as it looks and it is hard to imagine the situation if you are poor. Never underestimate the mental courage of the innocent people.
