This is one of the worst political analyses I have ever read. The New York Times headline is categorically inaccurate. The opinion piece portrayed establishment Republicans as defeating Senator Ted Cruz and tea partiers because Senator John Cornyn and Rep. Pete Sessions won. Good for them. But the night was about conservatives winning. In fact, the five statewide candidates that Senator Ted Cruz supported won, including my friend State Sen. Ken Paxton. He beat current State Rep. Dan Branch and Barry Smitherman, current statewide-elected Texas Railroad Commissioner. And now Paxton and Branch are in a runoff for Texas Attorney General. The story should have been about the many conservatives who gave up their current offices to run for higher office, such as Attorney General Greg Abbott, State Sen. Dan Patrick, and Paxton. And it should have correctly recognized Texans like conservatives whether in the Tea Party or not. And they expect integrity in politicians self-identification. And Cruz has influence because he is politically conservative and takes the political risks we all complain incumbents are afraid to take. Be sure to vote for Ken Paxton for Texas Attorney General and Dan Patrick for Texas Lt. Governor in the runoff election in 12 weeks. --Mark P. Yablon
