Karr is a German Shepherd that was imported to Southern Police Canine Inc. and purchased by the City of Kinston Department of Public Safety in the spring of 2008. Canine Karr was re-assigned to a new handler in the fall of 2011 and re-trained. Police Canine Officer Karr was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer in 2012 by a local vet. The canine normally weighing 75 to 80 pounds dropped his weight to 55 pounds. Canine Karr underwent extensive medical treatment at NC State Animal Hospital but the cancer diagnosis was unconfirmed. Karr was placed on a special diet and gained his weight back. He returned to duty a couple of months later. In 2013 Officer Karr incurred a knee injury to his right rear leg doing a building search at a residential breaking and entering. Karr was treated by a local vet and placed on medication. Karr suffered a side effect to the medication and started having seizures. He was rushed to an emergency vet and referred to NC State. The cause for the seizures was not apparent at the time so he was placed on a seizure medication. Karr again experienced a side effect of the medications he was placed on and went into a comatose state. He was transported to an emergency vet but he was too critical for their care level. He was immediately transported to NC State Emergency vet and hospitalized. He was not expected to survive the night. Karr recovered from the side effects of the medications and returned to duty several months later. Police Canine Karr never recovered from the on duty injury he incurred that night. Karr experienced at least one seizure in early 2014. He has continued to work while on a special diet and direct care of his partner. The injury has gotten worse and is affecting the way he walks, jumps, and even stands. The continued strain of Police Canine duties coupled with Karr’s medical condition will cause hip dysplasia, ultimately resulting in Karr being euthanized. The vet, the handler, and other canine experts have advised that canine Karr be retired to his current handler whom has a great understanding of Karr’s medical needs. The City of Kinston North Carolina Department of Public safety has re-assigned the canine back to his original handler whom has not had the canine for over 3 years and has no knowledge of Karr’s medical needs. They are intending to continue to work him.
