This is part of the final scene of The Awakening. The song is a pretend folk song, sung in Spanish, forshadowing the end of the opera. My love sailed far out on the sea to catch our wedding feast. He cast his net, pulled it in and caught a maid of the sea. She rose from the foam, blew a kiss and offered to be his queen. He brought the mermaid home and put her on my chair. He dressed her in my wedding gown and brushed seaweed from her hair. He said “My heart, I love you true, but my siren is more fair!” My love, I wept such tempting charms you dare not decline. Ill move into the city and a new lover I will find. Perhaps he’ll be a handsome man who’s manners are refined. He took the mermaid by her tail and threw her into the sea. The mermaid sank into the foam and swam into the deep. He dried my tears, took my hand and wed me that same eve. (Mariequitta sees Edna walking towards the beach. She ties off the excess twine and cuts it.) Mother Mary! A spirit! No it’s Roberts sweetheart. Is she going to the beach for a wash? No, the water is too cold! Perhaps she’ll only go down and dip her toes in. I’d better tell someone she’s here. (Exit Mariequitta)
