This is probably the first accurate account of the plight of the Yezidi to hit he German or English language media to date. Vice Chancellor of Germany, Sigmar Gabriel´s speech on the Yezidi refugees in Northern Iraq: The descriptions are almost impossible to put into words. Everything you have seen in the press until now was presented to us again today. It is the preparation of holocaust, of genocide and nothing else, i.e. that the religious community and the ethnic community of the Yezidi in Iraq should be wiped out and with really brutal precision. I believe the international community is surprised by it. The Yezidi themselves have informed me that for them, this development had been evident for some time and that warnings were widespread, including warnings in the public sphere. The situation became so appalling because the Iraqi army and sections of the Kurdish army withdrew from the Yezidi settlements, which made the incredibly rapid advance of ISIS forces possible. Naturally, the key question (in our meeting) was “what can we do”, as you can imagine....
