This is sent to me by KARATULA, a youth-based cultural organization that has taken the initiative to write against the Pork Barrel System. Please read this letter, and if you agree with it, please consider reposting it and sharing it with your friends. I hope that we, as Filipinos, would be able to reach a solid state of unity against this cycle of corruption that cripples our country: Enough is Enough Artists unite against Pork Barrel We, from the Filipino artist community, of various backgrounds and practices, stand united against the prevalence of the Pork Barrel system in our country. The culture of corruption this administration has wrought upon our country must be abolished. Recent exposes have brought to light a number of government officials who have engaged in corruption and pillaged public funds. However it is becoming more and more apparent how the Office of the President has been using the pork barrel to further consolidate its power in different areas. This despicable accumulation of patronage politics has coursed through the veins of our country for far too long, and is being perpetrated by the President himself. Benigno S. Aquino III has not only defended the pork barrel system, but has taken part and increased its budget allocation. We cannot remain silent while we are blatantly fed lies by the President about fighting corruption when his own office is its chief instigator. One trillion pesos is the staggering amount of the President’s pork barrel. This is almost half of the National Expenditure Program for 2014. No one in the country, except the President can dictate where and how this massive amount is to be spent. Janet Napoles’ P10 billion Pork Barrel scam is just the tip of the iceberg. President Aquino has drastically increased the funding for pork barrel since his term began; from P10.07 billion in 2010, P24 billion in 2013 and to P27 billion for 2014. This administration has apparently been averse to transparency since the beginning. These are funds that should be used for schools, hospitals, houses, jobs and projects to enrich Filipino life and identity. The Pork Barrel system has deprived millions of Filipinos of their rights to social services. The government can no longer claim to have no power in regulating the soaring prices of basic commodities and public utilities. This has gone on long enough. We call on our fellow artists to join us and take action against this cycle of fraud and exploitation. We pledge to stand alongside our contemporaries and the people on August 23, Sigaw ng Bayan Laban sa Pork Barrel at Kurapsyon ni Aquino and August 26, Day of Rage vs Aquino #porkbarrel. Scrap the Presidential Pork Barrel! Abolish Pork Barrel! Convened by: KARATULA (Kabataang Artista Para sa Tunay na Kalayaan)
