This is so SO important in light of Robin Williams death. Please understand that what @theacademy did was wrong. Suicide should never be celebrated as an option, and we need to be able to discuss it outside of closed doors. Also, I would like to clarify something because I feel the word contagion is misleading... Talking about suicide does NOT plant a seed of suicidality. Copy-cat suicide is when a recent, well known (or close to the person) suicide is heavily publicized, and it makes an already suicidal person see suicide as a more acceptable, viable option. Talking about mental health doesnt make healthy kids suddenly be like You know what? Im going to kill myself. That sounds like a grand idea. Talking about suicide and mental health is actually the most important preventative and healing act we can do... We need to talk about mental health. If you, your friend, your child, or anyone you know is struggling with depression, talk it out. Talk it out in a judgement-free zone. Talk about feelings. Talk about needs. Talk about wants. Talk about safety. Talk about why, if there even is a why. Every life is worth preserving, and if you need help, there should be no shame in asking.
