This is so obvious, but it is difficult for many to deal with the truth that criticism comes with being alive, and esp. if one is involved with substantive issues. Indulge me while I share some examples: 1.According to his brothers, Joseph was a dreamer and was also wearing the wrong colored coat (Gen 37:1f) 2. Moses relatives were disloyal to him when an Ethiopian woman showed up as his wife (Numbers 12). 3. Davids brothers didnt like him involved in bringing down the Philistine soldier named Goliath (1 Sam 17:28). 4. Jeremiah ended up in jail because he reminded the political leaders they were going the wrong way regarding their attitude toward enemy-Babylon (Jer 20, 26, 28) 5. Amos was told to get out of Bethel when he criticized their faulty religion (7:10f). 6. St Paul was an outsider in his relationship with leaders he called false apostles (2 Cor 10:8f.; 11:13) 7. St Francis was dis-owned by his father when he renounced wealth, and used money to re-build crumbling churches 8. Astronomer Galileo was told to stand down when he mentioned the scientific fact the planet earth (thought to be the center of the universe) was actually circling the sun. 9. Many people hated Luther because he insisted on reform in church practice and theology--now. 10. John Wesley, an Anglican trained at Oxford, was rejected as a preacher in many pulpits because he interpreted religion for the common people. 11. Susan B. Anthony, in l872, was hauled into a Rochester, NY court (and fined $100) for voting in a political election. For the time, this was shocking feminism. 12. FDR, a patrician, was shunned by many aristocrats because he was fighting for a safety net for needy people. 13. Medgar Evers was murdered in the l960s when he fought to get voting rights for his fellow Afro-Americans in Mississippi.
