This is something I wrote in response to a post on another thread. Hope it makes sense out of context, as it were... ...But our healthcare too often is not good... Worse, when vital and potentially lifesaving services are removed and placed twenty miles away, over what is officially one of the worst roads in the south of England, we have every right to complain. We pay for this stuff and justifiably complain bitterly when some numbnuts decides its all too expensive or unnecessary. Even by ambulance with yelpers, wailers and blue xmas lights all honking and blinking away the journey can take 45 minutes or more. How much fun is that going to be when the icy weather arrives? Our ambulance service is at full stretch - even with private ambulances being paid handsomely to take the less serious cases. The hospital at Hastings is nowhere near anything, which means one has to drive or take the bus. Once youre there, parking is charged by the gold standard. Sure, most people can drive there, of course - owning and driving a car is so cheap, these days (yes, that was sarcasm) - but my daughter-in-law and my son were resident for several days and I had to make no fewer than six trips, for they have no car. With my wife away I also had to take my profoundly disabled daughter with me for the ride on a couple of occasions. If we retained these services at our local hospital in Eastbourne, none of this would matter. The powers-that-be spoke of the benefits of having a centre of excellence, even if it is miles away, but it is too busy, too crowded, too understaffed. Thats why were protesting and thats why were demanding that the incompetent people who ordered the closures be sacked. Weve had three births at the roadside already and we may be only hours away from the first deaths. The government needs to stump up more loot and the hospital trust needs to step down from a role it is patently not qualified or willing to do competently.
