This is the 7:00am report from Mayberry by the sea......The blue glow emerged from behind the oaks across the street and etched them from the darkness....and on cue every bird in the neighborhood began to sing....first one lone redbird.....then a few seconds later a mockingbird then another and the next moment the island erupted in this morning music......a symphony of waves breaking on the beach....birdsong and crickets.....today the wind is still and I can hear everything out side of the studio...the doors are open and sound is travelling far and clear......the car traffic is picking up but the bird music is loud....heavy traffic on the feeder just outside of the window...I can observe the birds from behind the matchstick blinds a mere foot away.....at the moment it is now being occupied by the house finches.....before that there was a blue jay and a redbird and before that were the Chickadees and the titmouse....the doves are cooing on the wire and Mayberry by the sea is coming to life....I am getting back on my dysfunctional sleep schedule again and I couldnt be happier...sleep is for normal people.....last week I began sleeping through the night.....in bed early and I would wake up after 7:00am....that sucks!.....I didnt see the stars at night.....the beautiful blue light of the pre-glow at dawn...or the sun rising over the ocean......I would wake up and be so dissapointed and felt lethargic and fuzzy brain from all that damn sleep......you can have a full nights sleep if you want to...but I will stick to my 4 naps every day...that is what works for me.....I can fit two days of work into every day....I see the sunrise... the stars and the moon.....and I am energetic and alert all day....which brings me to ...INCIDENT ON STATION 18 1/2.......the night was clear and the stars were so abundant they shined down and made the night brighter....it made the trees stand forward in silhouette......and I wondered as I looked up into them why I have not painted them yet....I could hear the sound of an electric guitar breaking the silence of the night from a distance and hopped on my bike and grabbed my camera in case I saw something.....I rode down to Back Street Creek and navigated through the rain soaked field leading up to the creek...through the all the kayaks and canoes that people keep there...and up to the waters edge.......Im listening for the distant guitar and thats ....when....I....caught.....move-ment!.............something big.....really BIG in the bushes next to me........I hear the distant guitar at that moment and determined it was coming from Goldbug Island...I thought of Edger Allen Poe and his poem Goldbug....I thought about his time here on the island for just a millisecond and said to myself...OK...guitar mystery over......the stars are beautiful......the distant lights of Charleston across the marsh and harbor are charming......the tide running through the reeds sound lovely.......but.......there is something huge in the bush next to me...too bad I cant stay!.....OK......I sling my tripod and camera over my shoulder and hop on my bike The Shadow and start pumping my legs like steel pistons trying to get.... theee.... hell..... outta there....and thats when the beast revealed itself to me....biggest little kitty cat you ever saw....one of those wild kittens that live here......sounded like a panther in that bush........I got soaked in the puddles trying to get away from that terrible monster.....Mayberry by the Sea....livin life on the edge of the wilderness....and small town America at its best...
