This is the Mon, Jan 26 edition of My Music Video of the Day. Todays music video is Surrender by Cash Cash. EDM or electronic dance music is a different animal then what we see in the regular pop music world. In EDM, there is a producer/mixer/DJ who creates, mixes and performs the non-vocal aspect of the music. Thats who Cash Cash is. Then, usually, there is a person who sings the vocals and most times doesnt even get credit for the effort. For example, the vocalist on this song is Julia Michaels. Her name is not even listed. In regular pop music, a group of people play different instruments to create music . In EDM, the producer/mixer/DJ doesnt play but manipulates various sound-making machines like synthesizers, turntables, etc. to create music. I know that some of you may already know this but remember some readers may not. As to the music in this music video, you hear the heavy thump of bass notes usually done by a synth machine that creates the sound of a drumbeat. That other sound you hear that sounds like an organ is also coming from a synthesizer. That sound that plays like someone is moving a vinyl record to create a sustained but variable note could actually be someone moving a vinyl record or it can be created with a synthesizer. Another characteristic that is created artificially is the background sound of clapping to the beat. Visually, there are some things that I understand and others I dont. For example, the guys and girls in the video have gotten together and they play spin the bottle. The loser has to take off a piece of clothing. This little party gets revved up to the point where its somewhat of a making-out free-for-all. That is easy to figure out and even the reference to tattooing is not a challenge. What the two Asian twins are doing in this video, I dont know. And then, those same twins are jumping rope. Did I mention the living piggy bank that spews out coins out of a slot in his back. What the hell is that? And why does one of the girls slash the pig with a knife? Pretty soon you have guys kissing girls, girls kissing girls, swapping spit left and right, coins all over the place, cats and dogs, human sacrifice, etc. OK, maybe not the least two. Im telling you I got 80% of the video figured out. If you understand the other 20%, write and explain it to me. Lyrically, the verses that set up the chorus could be any words. What counts is the chorus. Thats because in the chorus are the words that every red-blooded male wants to hear... Drivers, start your engines ... No, wait, thats the Indy 500...make that, if you hold me now, and leave me never, say youll stay with me forever, then I surrender, surrender! Thats the crux of the whole song. The idea that she will surrender herself if you promise a commitment. Im including links in two other posts. One is a link to the You Tube lyric video for the song and the other is a link to the Wikipedia entry for the group, Cash Cash.
