Here is the story behind this tune. “WONDERFUL EARS” Written by: Ralph Williams & Jermaine Layton This song is an original. Jermaine and I were in the studio back in May, 2013 and Jermaine was working on an early mix of NYSOM. At that point we had only laid down a rough piano, bass and vocal track. While he was doing that I started messing around on the piano and writing some new lyrics that dealt with an idea I had. Weve heard about the things that attract us to others. Since Louanne and I have been married nearly 100 years (not really, but I think we will make to 100), I thought I would approach this song from a place that might be different than most would think. I looked back over our years together and it finally dawned on me..................... when she listens to me, she really listens and I appreciate that so much. Hence, I wrote down the words, Wonderful Ears and the song just started to flow. After I completed all of the lyrics, I shared my idea with Jermaine and told him the vibe/bounce that I was feeling. I sang the song into his phone and asked him to think about how we might put the song together. I wanted it to be light, jazzy and simple on the surface. I also told him I heard some quirky things going on in the background (because in real life, quirky things seem to come in and out at the strangest times.) I told him I could hear a trumpet doing a kind of marching run in the 2nd verse as if I were walking down the street and happened to pass a trumpet player playing on the side walk with his case open asking for tips, and then be gone as quickly as it appeared. I wanted to make this an intimate song that recognized the things that I paid attention to in my wife, and even push a couple of limits with a couple of slightly suggestive lyrics. Why? Well, because its about being real. Not necessarily what Louanne might think I pay attention to, but the things that over the years Ive grown to love and appreciate because of who she is, how she handles herself and all of the fun and different ways she makes me feel so special. Bottom Line: Its a love song from my perspective of our many years together. I wanted this song to be a fun, feel good song that I would hope many couples could relate too, and I wanted it to be a song that tells a story of what can be if you look closely at your partner in all of the ways that keep a relationship young, strong and flourishing for a lifetime. It will probably be received as a bit hokey, but I dont really care, because its genuine. Well, me and Jermaine went to work on it and within an hour we had the piano and rough vocal tracks in place. From there we built the song to fit the feelings being shared. Chris Borin did a wonderful job on trumpet. On saxophone, David Carr, Jr. delivered exactly the emotion and fire we wanted for the interlude. Lio Saenz was brilliant on the upright bass and acoustic guitar. King Robinson, Jr. did wonderful brush work on the drums and put his sticks to good use when the call came for something a bit more aggressive. As always, Jermaine Layton on keys makes any song sound amazing. Jermaine also put the strings together on this one. I wanted my vocal to be fun, caring, loving, a bit whimsical and, with just a little naughtiness thrown in. Most of all, I wanted it to be believable. I love this song, because its real, and its personal. Wonderful Ears was released worldwide on WipeOut Records February 11, 2014. It is available on iTunes, Amazon and a host of other Internet music stores around the world. Thank you for your support!
