This is the first time Ive managed to get to my laptop in a few days and the first thing I want to say is how incredible SDMS present Avenue Q was on Wednesday night! Essay review coming up people; prepare yourselves! If youve seen the rehearsal videos on Facebook then it really doesnt do this show justice. The cast had me captivated from the very first number - I just sat back and knew it was going to be a cracking show. I was in stitches throughout, the acting was superb, the puppets looked amazing. Some people may argue that the people drew attention away from the puppets but, in my opinion, the people made the puppets more alive by adding the facial expressions that the puppets obviously cant create - it just worked! Apart from a few lighting slip-ups, such as a blackout during someones number (whoops! Haha), I couldnt take my eyes away with phenomenal lighting design and a wonderful set. The only part of the show I didnt really get were the TV screens but I have a feeling that was a reference to Sesame Street which I never watched so I think I may have been missing the joke somewhat... As for the principals, the voices suited each character perfectly, the casting couldnt have been better and the sound they created was so professional. Ross Elliott Cobbold and Darren Alderton as Rod and Nicky were a brilliant duo, innuendos being thrown all over the show with such confidence made the brilliant writing even funnier, not to mention great vocals from both with some impressive high tenor notes! Sally Goddard as Kate Monster had absolutely perfect comic timing and never missed a beat, and really pulled on those heartstrings during A Fine Fine Line as the Act 1 finale. Such versatility accompanied with faultless acting. Alex Hillman was great as Princeton and you really felt for his character in his sadder moments yet also felt such love for him towards the end in the higher times. Sue Rourke was definitely a highlight of the show as Christmas Eve with the most hysterically funny ad-lib I think I have ever heard. I wont spoil it but it had me creased up for far longer than is socially acceptable! Matt Sackman, you should be incredibly proud of yourself, my friend! For a directorial debut, youve smashed the bar already - youre definitely up there with my favourite directors and I dont say that lightly! If I continued listing all the things and people I loved within this show, I would be here all night so Ill wrap it up by saying this: This show is NOT one to be missed. If I werent working last night, tonight and tomorrow, I would DEFINITELY be going again. So whatever you do, do not miss this show. Tonight and tomorrow at 7:30pm at Farehams Ferneham Hall. Tickets from £12.50.
