This is the first time that I found myself elated by the irritating paternalism of Windows default settings. Yesterday I missed an important event that I was supposed to take part to, because the alarm clock did not wake me up. Besides the shame for what happened, I felt completely dismayed by the fact that I could not take my bodys psycho-physiological reactions for granted anymore. The alarm which I thought did not wake me up was tested over the weeks and proved itself to be flawless. Its a shrieking, loud, and startling rooster call. And when I say loud, I mean so loud that if my alarm does not wake me up, the neighbors banging on my door with pitchforks and homicidal lust will. It is impossible for a brain, no matter how sleep-deprived, to not react to such a startling stimulus. Its a bit of a rough wake-up, on top of the usual morning cortisol spike, but it is 100% reliable. Thus, when yesterday I thought that my virtual rooster shrieked for half an hour (this is how long the alarm goes on before it stops), without this having any effect on me, I felt at loss with my own brain. I thought I could not take even the simplest physiological reactions for granted. I didnt know how to be/become a reliable person with the people around me, if I could not rely on my own brain-body interface. Then yesterday evening I came back home, and when I woke up the little notebook on which the alarm is installed, a life-saving pop-up appeared. Windows has recently installed new updates. This required the system to be restarted (or something along these lines). The bloody Windows! The life-saving Windows! The alarm never never went off in the first place because the system restarted itself overnight! Oh glory, oh joy! Now I disabled this automatic settings, and I can have serene (no matter how short) sleep for the days to come, lulled by the thought that my brain will reliably respond to the roosters call. Until the day Ill turn deaf.
