This is the letter I sent to Jaydens teacher this morning. It has been redacted. If anyone would like to use it as a form letter, you have my permission. Its time to take a take a stand. Oct. 23, 2014 ▬▬, It is with the utmost respect for both you and your profession that I write this letter. ▬ and I did his math homework this week together. We attempted to do it using the “new” way and after much frustration, I did not understand how to do it or why it would be done this way. I am a product of the Lake County school system and I have a college education. I am entrusted by my company to supervise employees throughout the entire state of Florida and yet I am struggling with second grade math. Furthermore, as a supervisor, I would not hire anyone that approaches math in this fashion. A 7-year-old child should not be spending more than an hour trying to figure out and complete one sheet of math. ▬ did complete his homework using the “old’ way. He will continue to do it this way because we don’t subscribe to the Common Core method in our home; to put it quite simply; it’s garbage. I refuse to let my child be used as a lab rat on curriculum that has not been tested or proven. My son will not be a social experiment. And now, instead of concentrating solely on school lessons this week, ▬ has learned another lesson – standing up for what’s right. That is my reasoning behind this decision and this letter. I was raised to stand up for what I believe in and do what I can to change something that’s unjust and▬is being raised the same way. Sen. Alan Hays spoke to the Board on Monday and not only voiced his concerns, but admitted he was wrong and I commend him for that. To borrow his words, “Common Core is not our best effort and we must abandon it at the earliest possible date. Every day we delay we are putting our students behind. ” If our local, state and federal government won’t put a stop to it, then I will, at least in our home. I expect ▬▬ to be given full credit for every question he answers correctly regardless of the method he used to arrive there. Every night I hear horror stories on social media of our Lake County children struggling, believing they are “unteachable,” stupid and worthless. I refuse to allow my child to feel this way, especially when he is successful when he uses tried and true methods and arrives at the correct answer. Parent involvement is a huge indicator of success and it baffles me why anyone or any method would strive to systematically alienate parents from being able to help their children. I certainly don’t want to make an already difficult job more difficult, ▬, but ultimately I owe it to my son to do what’s best for him and allowing Common Core/Florida State Standards in our home isn’t it. Please call me if you have any questions or concerns and I look forward to our conference next week. Thank you, ▬ CC (email): Susan Moxley, Rosanne Brandebug; Bill Mathias; Debbie Stivender; Kyleen Fischer; Sen. Alan Hays
