This is the only thing I will say on this subject, and I will do - TopicsExpress

This is the only thing I will say on this subject, and I will do my best not to reply to any comments. This Ferguson issue is way Way WAY too complex to break down in a simplistic Facebook post. Its also not this black and white (pardon the pun). It also is not a case of an isolated incident. There are scores of well educated articles easily available that talk about social unrest and the factors leading up to an incident like this. Some of those issues are minimal opportunity for economic advancement, the feeling of oppression, repeated offenses by the power structure, and the absence of a reasonable expectation of justice, among a number of others. It is impossible for an outsider to say whether those things are true for a specific community or class of people. Rioting is wrong and does not solve anything, it only serves as a ludicrous outlet for misplaced anger. Looting is wrong, violence in general is wrong. When a community or class of people feel there is no other outlet, no reasonable outlet within the power structure or the justice system with which to take their repeated grievances, this is what takes place. (I have no idea why people riot after winning a championship in a major sport). Is it right? No. Is anything that happened today, from the verdict (for lack of a better word) to the reaction a surprise? No. Again, this isnt an isolated incident, and considering the nature of political discourse in general (vile, accusatory, demeaning, zero-sum, antagonistic, adversarial) this may not be the last episode of civil unrest from any non-dominant class (almost exclusively economically lower class or some other minority class). Again, this issue is way too complex for a simple Facebook assessment, even the one above. If you care enough to voice your opinion I hope you care enough to read up on the issues from multiple independent sources in order to form that opinion. Sources matter. Edit: I am more than happy to discuss any of the above in a private message or phone call. I wont engage in a pointless Facebook comment debate, but this is America so feel free to voice your opinion.
