This is the painting that will be exhibited for sale in DAX Gallery, Costa Mesa, California on 11th (Philanthrophy Night) & 12th October (Community Awareness Day). This is the 3rd Annual Hidden Truths, the Mind Unravelled Art Show. The aim of this art show is for a good cause ........ research and recognition of the artists living with epilepsy. Buyers will purchase the paintings based on their personal preference/liking of the piece displayed and the story behind the person who did it. To qualify, the painting must be done by an epileptic and this has to be supported with a bio as well as write-up on how epilepsy has influenced art and creativity. Here is Janets bio and story that was submitted. Sharing this is with intent to give all who are living with epilepsy hope that if we persevere and dont give up regardless of the odds that are working against you we still have a chance to see light at the end of the tunnel. Biography of Janet Lee --------------------------- Born in 1989, Janet was diagnosed with intractable epilepsy at 1 ½ years old. Till date, even with medication, her seizures are not controlled and no one can predict or foresee when an attack will happen. As her seizures involve falling onto the ground, someone has to be with her all the time. In addition to being epileptic, Janet also has learning difficulties. She started showing signs of learning difficulty when she started pre-school at 5 years old. Eventually she was classified as a slow learner at 7 and thereafter as intellectually disabled when she was 16 as by that age she was still not able to read, write or do simple arithmetic etc. In that same year (2005), an assessment showed that Janet could have had visual processing difficulties. Since her vision was corrected, she started learning to read and write and is still learning. She has from young always had a strong desire to do well in her studies and still aspires to enter University so learning will continue and (hopefully) one day she will be able to achieve her dream. (It’s a real pity that a child with so much desire to study had wasted 11 years learning nothing – sigh.) Epilepsy’s Influence on Janet’s Art & Creativity ------------------------------------------------------ As Janet has been on medication since 1.5 years old so she really has no knowledge as to how much better or worse life could have been with and without epilepsy. However, from young, Janet has always shown a love for colours and colouring. Drawing is never her interest (probably due her visual processing issue) and when she does her colouring, she has her own preference of what colours to use. The end results are paintings with very abstract designs. Since following this present art teacher, over the course of 3 years, Janet has attempted and successfully done paintings in: - Fine art using pointillism - Chinese brush painting - Abstract art She has in the past attempted digital art as well and is now exploring calligraphy. We have decided to select her abstract art paintings for jurying because: - This is what she loves most - The paintings submitted are entirely her – creation, layout, colours etc. Janet is not very good in expressing herself or her feelings so the following statement from her is composed based on her answers to questions asked of her about why she likes art and why her paintings are all so colourful. Janet says “I love art as it makes me feel good. I love bright colours as it gives me a happy feeling. Abstract art is my favourite because it allows me to express myself freely.
