This is the start of my revamped beginning to my novel, Red Halos that will be published in early fall. RED HALOS a novel by author, Martin Chapman.... the begining. The ballpoint pen shrieked across the the legal pad, as the yellow reflection of the paper gleamed back at thirty five year old, Middleburg Homicide Detective, Mitch Maxum. It was as if the pen had a mind of its own, and was begging for more ink to dispense out of the tip of it to scribe the homicide case notes for his quadruple murder investigation. The cold dry air, from the police issued Chevy, Impala, was purposely directed at his face and rushed out of the dash air vents that were set to high. Combined with the cafinated black coffee the air kept him alert and awake, as he dabbed his finger in the corner of his eyes to clear away any mucus. A polished appearance was always a must for the tall muscular detecyive from Kerrville, Texas. He quickly grabbed his brush from the center console and stroked over his entire head of black coarse hair once in anticipation of being corralled by the media that anxiously waited behind the bright yellow police crime scene tape. The beads of sweat collected on the forehead of the rattled first officer on the scene. A two year police veteran with eyes that were clearly welled up with tears and distinctly sad. It was a look that resembaled a police recruit right out of training on his first homicide case. Mitch saw movement to the left in his peripheral vision and glanced out the driver window. He saw the officer for the first time quickly running toward his car. He stared at the sweat soaked dark blue uniform shirt that stuck to the short officers husky chest that was covered by body armor. The armor protruded from the front and rear of the shirt and bounced with every stride. Obviously agitated the officer frantically tapped on the window glass while looking right at Mitch thru it. He shouted through the glass, Detective Maxum, I need you now I cant... Before he could finish his sentence an infuriated Mitch pushed the car door open quickly and lunged from the car. He straightened his long muscular frame with his full lips tight and his hazel eyes streached. Looking down at the officer ready to pounce, he realized the burly police veteran had tears in his eyes, and was having an emotional moment after viewing the crime scene. Mitchs eyes softened as he calmly asked the officer, Are you okay? Is the crime scene secure? The officer wipe away the welled up tears that had not fell from his eyes, on to the back of his hand and said, Detective Maxum there are three kids between the ages of two and six, gaged and shot execution style in the back of the head in that house. The scene is secure and access by police is being limited for evidence protection. He wiped his eyes once again and was unsteady on his feet. In a calming voice Mitch said Its okay officer. We will treat their remains with respect and dignity. Whats your name? I dont think weve met. Its Drawdy sir, Mark Drawdy. I met you my first month in the academy two years ago. You taught the class on preservation of evidence at a crime scene. he said with red eyes and a pale face. Its a pleasure to meet you again, Mark. Sit right down here in my car for a moment and relax with the air conditioner. Ill be back in a few moments to check on you. Mitch, with his tough exterior and sometimes gruff responses had a real sensitive side non of his coworkers and friends knew about. Not even his wife or mother had a clue of his emotional side, that he often thought of as a weakness. He trudged toward the crime scene and felt a little emotional himself. He thought, Wow that was only the second time in thirteen years as a homicide detective that Ive seen an officer cry at a scene. This must be a pretty bad one. he sighed. Mitch ducked under the crime scene tape with his clip board and note pad clutched under his arm. He tucked his forest green polo shirt, embroidered in yellow with MPD Homicide Unit, in his loose fit khaki pants.
