This is the statement that I have tonight to Local 15 News: Today’s Supreme Court decision allowing for-profit companies like Hobby Lobby Inc. to opt out of a requirement that birth control be included in employee health insurance plans is a gross affront to religious freedom. This radical view holds that a woman’s personal decisions concerning her health are subject to the religious beliefs of her employer. Furthermore, this ruling sets the precedent that other medical procedures or medications may be denied due to an employers religious beliefs. In the words of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Religious organizations exist to foster the interests of persons subscribing to the same religious faith. Not so of for-profit corporations. Workers who sustain the operations of those corporations commonly are not drawn from one religious community.
