This is the tricolour that the Kerala Chief Minister Mr. Oommen Chandy had hoisted at Kanakakunnu in Thiruvananthapuram on 26th January 2013. Union Minister of State for Human Resource, Mr. Shashi Tharoor who is also the MP from Thiruvananthapuram constituency along with the Flag Foundation of India (an organisation run by Mr. Naveen Jindal, MP) was behind this project at Kanakakunnu. The mast of this flag is supposed to be the tallest of its kind in India. The Flag Foundation had provided two huge flags at the time of erection of the mast. The main flag got damaged after a few days. It was replaced by the standby flag. When the standby flag also got damaged, the main flag was repaired and hoisted again. After a few days this flag was again torn and remained in the mast for few days in torn condition. Tourists who are coming to Kanakakunnu to see the tallest flag post in India are now disappointed. Why because at Kanakakunnu the flag is gone and the huge mast stand there as the ugly symbol of the minister’s irresponsibility and carelessness. Kanakakunnu is an open and high place in Thiruvananthapuram City. The place is exposed to rain, severe sunlight and strong winds. A person of the academic stature of Mr. Shashi Tharoor must have known about the consequences, if a flag of this size is hoisted at Kanakakunnu. He should have taken the necessary precautions, because handling of the national flag is a very sensitive issue in India. But he was all set to wash off the dirt he had on him through the national anthem case. A case in which an allegation was raised against him that; he had dishonored the National Anthem in a function held at Kochi in 2008. Fortunately for him on 6th July 2013, he was discharged off the case by the additional chief judicial magistrate. As far as Mr. Shashi Taroor is concerned the importance of this flag is over.
