This is tragic for the football team, but bad for the school and catastrophic for UAB Athletics as a whole. Well have to drop down to a lower tier conference. Kids with scholarships for band, dance, cheerleading, as well as football, will be SOL. Coaching and support staff will lose their livelihoods. Non-scholarship students who came just for the chance to play college ball, or march, or cheer are having their dreams crushed. Worse is the blow to morale to everyone at the university, knowing that, despite and outpouring of support from businesses & political leaders across the state (and even students at the Tuscaloosa campus), a handful of bitter old white men think so little of UAB and the education of her students, that they are offering this sacrifice as a going away present to retiring board member Paul Bear Bryant, Jr. as vengeance for one dead man against another dead man. It wont bring the one back, and its not going to hurt the other. It is a petty, if not downright evil act by pretty, if not downright evil men that will only hurt innocent people who had nothing to do with it. This makes me sad for the current students, and for the hard work a small handful of us in the band (many of us non-music majors) put into creating something awesome from nothing at all. And I know the players and cheerleaders from 93-95 mourn with us. #RIPBlazers
