This is very disturbing, especially actively reffing local - TopicsExpress

This is very disturbing, especially actively reffing local fighters in both Muay Thai and MMA. First off, the experts are playing Monday-morning quarterback, however, if you were in the refs shoes or that fighters corner, or in the crowd, it looks a lot different than the way we are watching it on YouTube. As a referee, Im responsible for the safety of both fighters. Knowing that the fighter in red, this is his first fight, you have to watch him carefully (I watch eyes carefully - you can tell if a fighter wants to be there or not). The experts talked about him crossing his feet, I find that hard to believe, especially, even in the UFC, fighters cross their legs all the time. The biggest difference is it looks like hes walking on ice where he can fall at any time. He has plenty of heart where he looks to be in trouble, but he keeps swinging and fighting back right away so I can see how the ref let it continue to go. The ref should have gave a standing 8-count numerous times. I know when I give a standing 8, I talk and ask if they want to continue multiple times. In between rounds, I tell the fighters to watch their fighter because they should know know their limitations and capabilities better than me. What I dont agree with, if this is his first fight, why isnt he wearing headgear, or shin guards? If hes not getting paid to fight, why do they they look like professional fighters? Why isnt there any protective gear on them besides a cup, mouthpiece, and gloves. I hate when fighters with no fights, complain about using headgear and how its not safe because it affects their vision. Get over yourself, lose the ego and the excuses. Im fortunate to see the same circle of fighters when I ref, so Im comfortable with my decision making if I have to call the fight or let the fighters push themselves. Unfortunately, this fight showcased here, is what people fear of any fight, death. RIP, listening to the experts play by play and watching this video helped me to understand key clues to help prevent this from ever happening again.
