This is what I have realized and concluded from Wits discussion @ great hall with our president.President Jacob Zuma will always be a subject of mockery for public courts of opinion, not always because of what he says and does, but because of who he is. The contempt with which society treats people without formal education and academic qualifications is evidenced in the way the president is treated, especially by the Black middle class and so called academics.Nothing he says or does will ever be good enough, not because of the act in itself, but because the burden of having succeeded an educated president will always be on his shoulders. Im sitting here thinking about all the times when the man has been subjected to cruelty for no other reason except that hes not a graduate. The incident where he held the sign written Cape Verde upside down immediately jumps to my mind. The man made an honest mistake, a mistake that couldnt been made by anyone. He held a paper upside down because it was pointed at the opposite direction to his line of sight, and because he was too focused on flashing cameras to see his mistake. But no, according to public opinion, that was yet another sign of his stupidity. According to society, that was evidence of how uneducated, how intellectually shallow he is. Thats what was concluded from him holding the paper upside down. Many things that the president did cannot be excused. But this viciousness with which hes treated merely on the basis of his being uneducated is very painful. Sure, education is important and the president shouldve returned to school when the democratic dispensation was ushered in. But he didnt and its unfortunate. However, this constant assault on his persona on this basis, this sensationalisation of everything he says, aimed at proving his stupidity, is unwarranted. There are some people in whose eyes the president is incapable of saying or doing anything right. Nothing, absolutely nothing he says is right. And when he says something wrong, its blown out of proportion without even being given proper analysis. No one wants to unpack anything; no one wants to engage the basis of any argument he poses. Just because its Jacob Zuma then no, its stupid and must be trashed. Someone else could say the same thing using better English and they wont be attacked. But the president with his layman English that has no sophistication, if he says the same thing, it becomes a festival of insults and attacks, mockeries and sensationalism. From my friend Maliaka
