This is what I have thus far for the discussion post which was due THURSDAY. I am 31 words short! 31 more words.... I think that the term racial smog describes the ways in which those vestiges of racism still with us in the United States today pollute our society. Just as smog pollutes the air with thick clouds through which it is difficult to see clearly, the persistent ideas and preconceptions about “race” make it difficult for us to see each other clearly. A great deal of progress has been made; individuals within our culture who openly espouse racist opinions are now stigmatized. This does not mean, however, that we have achieved equality for people of color. In reality, racism may be more difficult to identify and address because it is hidden (Harrison, 1998). Additionally, the repercussions of hundreds of years of oppression continue to have an impact on minorities in our country. Statistics regarding income, education, incarceration, and even life expectancy demonstrate this (Crapo, 2013). In thinking about the ways in which racial categories may have influenced my own life, I feel ill-equipped to provide examples. As a person with fair skin and blonde hair, I have been a member of the privileged majority within the communities in which I have lived. I cannot recall a time when I felt that I was being judged or evaluated based on how much melanin did or did not appear in my skin.
