This is what I think of the appointment of Alessandro Del Piero as Ambassador for the Asian Cup here in 2015..... Dont mistake this as disrespect for the man but ......... This is the classic case of $$ signs in the eyes of the governing body like they always do.... Its like as if someone said David Beckham and they all start drooling cos they know he puts bums on seats, sell shirts off the shelves and the money rolls in..... Yer thats all well and good but why is it that Australia is afraid of putting their own up in lights..... Why do we need to get those that have made their names overseas to promote the game over here????? As has been mentioned whilst I have the utmost respect for ADP and what he has achieved in football.....it hasnt been here in Australia....neither has Beckham, Roberto Baggio, Romario, Thierri Henry or anyone else. Find our football heroes that kids can relate to.... God the games been played here since......what the 1830s and there isnt anyone that we can choose to be an Ambassador??? Are you kiddin me! Yep thats right pay someone squillions to press the flesh, flash their pearly whites and then go back to their country. Well lets just have a look at just a smidge of players that we could choose from.... we have people like Timmy Cahill kids love him and how about those diehard performances of his, Lucas Neill ex Socceroos captain Harry Kewell debuting at 17 years old....with skills of a seasoned player John Aloisi playing in Spanish, Italian and English Leagues.......everyone remembers his penalty and the image of him taking his shirt off and running up the pitch.... What about Mark Viduka.....carving up the Australian and Croatian leagues, played in Scottish and EPL....not good enough? OK then how about Mark Schwarzer.....International shot stopper for over 20 years and surprise surprise writes childrens books Megs about soccer/football...yay!!! Still not enough??? well then how bout Craig Johnston......9 major honours in 7 years including the European Cup.....5 league titles prt of the grand time of Liverpool.....isnt that ambassador material????? I dont understand why those that run the game dont have faith in those in our own back yard that are part of OUR football history.... Cmon FFA pull yer fingers out, get the stars out of your eyes and start promoting our own.... Shame on you......
