This is what Swami Venkatesananda says about awareness. It is very difficult to live always in a state of awareness and to become aware when awareness is about to be lost. Yogis insist that to be able to do this requires grace. Whether you call it God or gurus grace it doesnt matter what it is-at that point one has to fall back upon grace. Grace does not mean dropping self effort, grace itself becomes self effort and self effort becomes grace. At the moment when distraction is about to strike, is it possible to gather your strength at that point and cling to this awareness, to God, to guru, or whatever is there? Therein lies the secret. In the Bhagavad Gita, Krisha says: "When like the tortoise which withdraws on all sides its limbs, he withdraws his senses from the sense objects, then his wisdom becomes steady." [Il.58]
