This is what is happening to school districts across the country. FYI EVERYONE, its not just in PA, its Nation Wide. but, take a look at this Our school district, like every other, said we would not see any changes in our curriculum due to the Common Core Standards. Our school district, like most others, said they would not be removing full texts of classic literature. Reality is quite different from what they promised us. The reality is, they dont have time to add the amount of informational texts AND keep the full curriculum that we used to have which included reading full texts of classical literature. Even though countless parents and the LA curriculum review board brought this up, no one was concerned. Now this is what we have. Truly, a dumbied down version of our former LA curriculum. Teachers and Administrators are very very good. I dont think they intentionally misled anyone. I think that this is a consequence of the new standards that they, in their heart of hearts, didnt think was possible. We are not attacking teachers or administrators; but simply want the damage to be controlled. Fortunately, we are there are many of us who will come out with their boxing gloves once they are informed of what has happened. We need to equip everyone with how to find out and how to battle their own schools. Here is what districts are telling us When the new LA standards were reviewed last year, we were promised that we would NOT be moving toward anthologies. We were assured that full texts would continue to be read in the classroom. Statements were made at school board meetings to the school board directors that we were not reducing the time spent on literature like the Odyssey and To Kill a Mockingbird. They assured us that none of the literature on our reading lists would be reduced to partial texts due to the trend toward more informational texts. The reports that we are getting back from our students are quite different from what we were told. We have been told that they only have time now to read partial texts. We are being told that only a couple of chapters of To Kill a Mockingbird are being required. Last year children were required to read JUST ONE act of the Odyssey when we were promised me that simply wasnt possible... There is a huge disconnect between what seems to be taught in the classroom and what we are being told. Our children are not going to receive the full text in the classroom with some key pieces of classic literature.
