This is what makes me love our babies so much!!! Thanks for sharing this video, Keisha Brown. It reminded me that I never took the time to do a post that I intended to do after graduation this year. Although Ive attended graduation every year for more than 15 years, this year as I sat there and watched our babies cross the stage, I saw something Id never seen before. I didnt just see them crossing the stage. As they walked across the stage, I saw them walking on top of everything that tried to take them under. I saw people walking on top of learning disabilities, on top of physical disabilities, on top of grief from the deaths of parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, and even a classmate. I saw our babies walking on top of poverty, discouragement, depression, and abuse. I saw girls who didnt let molestation stop them nor the pregnancy, nor the babies they had. I saw boys who had to become men too quickly and people who carried many more responsibilities than they ever should have been made to carry at that age. Yes, I saw people that made mistakes, but even greater than that, I saw people who recovered from them! We often discount or discredit what our young people go through, but never assume that because theyre young, their struggle is less than yours. Perhaps experience has helped you learn to cope, but the fact that they survived with inexperience makes them even stronger! Celebrate our young people! Theyre doing pretty good with the hand theyve been dealt! (To all my babies--past, present, and future-- I salute you!)
