This is what the Signal fire, north of Silver City, New Mexico, looked like with Infrared imagery Monday night. An airplane flies over the fire at night with special heat-sensing IR camera equipment to get a good picture of the size, shape, location, and intensity of the heat of the fire. An interpreter looks at the images and plots them on a map. These are images of the interpolators map and what it looks like when placed into Google Earth. This allows the fire crews to get a big picture look at the fire...and allows the fire operations team to develop an effective strategy to fight the fire.
