This is what the public needs to be aware of. No... Not that a cop killed another black kid... The public needs to know how to work with the police when confronted. A weapon is a perceived threat to public safety. In addition to that a perceived weapon is also perceived threat to public safety. When lives are at risk, then the time left to make decisions is reduced. If you do not present yourself as a nonthreatening individual, you will be perceived as a threat and treated accordingly. If you appear to increase your threat perception by reaching for your waist, moving quickly, or approaching an officer in a threatening manner, be prepared for the consequences. Police officers are not mind readers. They do not interact with people in positive situations on a regular basis. They see the worst of society, and try to protect the best of society. If you do not present yourself as other than compliant, you could force the officer to make instinctive decisions that could lead to negative consequences. I dont always agree with our laws, that all cops are angels, or that the system is infallible or perfect. But I do think that we are all human, and should give each other the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately, police officers are put in the position to make tough judgment calls on a daily basis. It is their job to protect society, not yours. So, if you have a beef with them, the law, or how you are treated, you need to do it appropriately. Brandishing BB guns is not going to end up well, regardless if its just BBs.
