This is why we drum. According to recent scientific research, drumming increases the development of various regions of the brain, including the corpus callosum, motor and auditory cortexes. When people are involved in drumming they are completely immersed in what we call their element or flow. Because drumming is its own playful reward, people know what they are doing is achievable and they feel relaxed, completely involved, focused and able to concentrate. With this state, participants report a greater sense of well-being. It releases negative emotions and allows for increased physical stamina. Through drumming, participants have an increased awareness of their own bodies, co-ordination and kinesthetic development. Playing rhythms increases listening skills and also increases childrens and teens abilities to focus for extended periods of time. There is also a direct correlation between musical skills and mathematics. Drumming also allows for teamwork, concentration and harmoniously brings diverse people together. Everyone has a heartbeat - we all have our own inner drum! Any exercise with music is a rhythm fitness format.
