This isnt just shameful, it is morally reprehensible. Between 5% and 20% of the prison population suffers from mental illness, varying by prison system. For every severely ill person hospitalized, there are 10 in prison. Prisoners, mentally ill or not, typically receive second-rate health care, at best. Roughly half of mentally ill prisoners receive treatment. Between 25% and 40% (estimated) of people with chronic illness are incarcerated at some point in their lives. When it comes to compassion for our most vulnerable citizens, Americans abjectly fail.
