This isnt my favorite perch, but its such a handsome bird I like it anyways! White-tipped Doves (Leptotila verreauxi) are often described as secretive birds of the tropical Americas but based on my experience at Sabal Palm Sanctuary, they are often anything but secretive... This true South Texas speciality is found in densely forested regions of the Lower Rio Grande Valley and south through Central and South America. It is true, here in the Valley they can be quite skulky. Yet, when presented with a fully stocked feeding station, they often adopt a much more brazen attitude. It isnt uncommon for me to see two dozen White-tipped Doves darting around our feeding station, often raising a wing and circling one another in an attempt to show the other up for feeding rights. However, as brazen as they can be, they are still doves and very easily spooked. Sit still, they creep in along the ground, preferring to walk less they draw too much attention. But as soon as you move they explode into the air and fly every which direction in impressive evasive maneuvers. The name is derived from the white-tips along the corner of their tails.
